The University of Rochester men's soccer team started off conference play strong with a 3-0 victory over New York University on Saturday night at Fauver Stadium.
The Yellowjackets (8-1-1, 1-0 UAA) got goals from juniors
Griffin Drake and
Alex Swanger along with freshman
Jeff Greblick to power past the Violets (6-3-1, 0-1 UAA) who were shutout for the third straight game.
In goal, senior
Mike Moranz made six saves for Rochester, earning his second solo shutout of the season. NYU's keeper Forrest Sexton made three saves.
Drake had the first good chance of the ball game for UR when his header four minutes into the game was pinned against the post by NYU keeper Forrest Sexton.
Senior
Max Fan had two good chances around 20 minutes into the contest, the first set up by a long sideline pass from
Jeff Greblick, the second off a great back heel pass from the freshman inside the box.
Drake then got Rochester on the board just over 25 minutes in when he slapped in a rebound off of Sexton. The initial shot was fired on net by sophomore
Tyler Buck. The tally was Drake's third of the year and his first since the season opener against Wilmington.
The Violets would respond with a great chance from junior Tim Goldman two minutes later. His opportunity off a corner kick from Colm Dillane was headed into the net but was stopped at the near post by junior
Alex Swanger.
Greblick nearly got a score of his own with six minutes left in the first half, his hard shot from 10 yards beat Sexton on the right side but careened off the post and back into play, sending UR into halftime with just a one goal margin.
10 minutes into the second half, Greblick was able to break through for his team leading sixth goal of the year. He and Sexton met one-on-one about 15 yards out from the goal and the UR freshman was able to break away on the left end line and find the back net from a tough angle, giving UR a 2-0 lead.
Swanger nearly made it 3-0 with a free kick just outside the box at 64:30. His shot from 20 yards out was tipped into and then over the crossbar by a sprawling Sexton, keeping the Rochester lead at two.
NYU countered with a header right on net by Bryan Walsh, but Rochester keeper
Mike Moranz was right there to save the point blank chance.
The Violets then had three great openings to score with under 18 minutes to play in the contest. The first was a header from Walsh that was saved off the line by UR's
Seth Davis-Brown. The rebound went right back to NYU's Mickey Ingerman who's second header was saved high by Moranz leading to the second corner kick in the sequence.
Rochester would then get a big insurance goal with 6:30 remaining. On a corner kick, Swanger took off towards the near post right as teammate Jeff Fafinski was approaching the ball. The short ball was then deflected by the junior just inside the far post for his fourth of the season.
Rochester has now scored over three goals in eight of 10 games on the year. The Violets had scored 20 goals in their first seven games before being blanked in the last three games.
Up next for the Yellowjackets is a top 25 showdown at Brandeis next Saturday. NYU next plays at home on Tuesday against New Jersey City University.
