After a standout career in Rochester colors, Mario Yanez Tapia re-joined the UR squash coaching staff as head coach for the 2021-22 season. Through two seasons, he has an overall record of 14-21 (.400), continually playing against the top teams in the collegiate squash ranks.
In his first season at the helm of the Yellowjackets, Yanez Tapia performed admirably with a young roster coming off a missed season due to the pandemic. Rochester finished 8-8 overall and ended the year ranked #10 in the College Squash Association rankings, falling in the CSA Hoehn Cup championship match. Six players were named All-Liberty League and Yanez and his coaching staff were picked as the conference Coaching Staff of the Year after earning the programs ninth ever Liberty League conference title.
Last season, the Yellowjackets finished 6-13 and claimed its fourth straight Liberty League Tournament title. Yanez was named conference Coach of the Year for the second straight season and four players were All-League representatives. Two players, Yash Fadte and Abdelrahman Lasheen were named CSA All-Americans, being second team selections.
Yanez Tapia previously has served as a Rochester assistant coach for three seasons from 2017-20.
The 2017 graduate from Rochester also has played professionally on the PSA World Tour, reaching a peak ranking of #76 on the professional circuit.
Yanez Tapia ended his UR career as the programs all-time wins leader with a 70-15 record and is ranked first in winning percentage (.824) in a Yellowjacket uniform.  He also was one of the two athletes from the 2016-17 team that ended their career as 1st Team All-Americans in four straight seasons, becoming the first in school history to accomplish that feat.
He was a finalist for the CSA's Skillman Award, given to the nations top collegiate player and then reached the finals of the CSA Individual Championships, being the second ever UR player to reach the national championship match. Â Yanez was also a four-time All-Liberty League choice.
Also while at UR, Yanez was a member of the Yellowjacket men's soccer team during his senior year.
Prior to enrollment at Rochester, Tapia was a five-time Mexican Junior National Champion and a five-time gold medalist at the Pan American Junior Games. Â
