Nate Micklos and Mike Springer tallied goals and goalkeeper Brian Minehan and the Rochester defense held the New York University Violets in check in a 2-1 victory here at Fauver Stadium in front of the Meliora Weekend crowd.
Rochester is now 8-3-1 overall, 2-0-0 in University Athletic Association play.
This game was a fiesty, tight defensive battle from the start; the shots and quality scoring chances were few and far between for both teams. The 'Jackets did notch the first two goals, with Micklos opening the scoring at 14:37 when he headed in a free kick from Nick Wheeler following a foul by the Violets (5-2-2 overall, 1-1-0 U.A.A.) to make the score 1-0.
Springer made it 2-0 early in the second half when he dove and headed in a Wheeler corner kick at 48:10. James Walkinshow put N.Y.U. on the board at 58:11 when he blasted the ball into the net after a free kick, but 2-1 was as close as N.Y.U. got.
Both defenses were active and strong throughout the contest. Minehan had three saves, including a leaping save to knock the ball over the crossbar late in the second half and added several nice defensive breakups and cut off many N.Y.U. plays. Defender Nate Rimmke also had a team save when he headed a ball of the line with Minehan out of net.
N.Y.U. goalkeeper Adam Colunga had one save and didn't see many balls get through to him thanks to the solid defense of the Violets. Rochester held an 8-7 advantage in shots.
