Rochester scored an early goal in each half and goalkeeper Brian Minehan made seven saves as the Yellowjackets defeated second-ranked Emory, 2-0, at Fauver Stadium. With the upset, Rochester improves to 3-1-0 in the U.A.A. and 9-4-1 overall. Emory is now 2-1-1 in the U.A.A., 12-1-1 overall.
It was Senior Day at the University and the Class of 2004 picked a perfect time to earn their 50th victory as a class.
Rochester struck first just over two minutes into the game, when forward Nate Micklos re-directed a Nick Wheeler corner kick across the goal box to midfielder Mike Springer, who headed the ball past out-of-position Emory goalkeeper Rohit Agarwal to give the 'Jackets the 1-0 lead at 2:04. Rochester would follow suit in the second half with another early goal just 1:24 into the half, when Micklos tapped in a nice cross from Wheeler, who was streaking down right wing, to make it 2-0 at 46:24. The score would stay that way in spite of steady offensive pressure throughout the half by the Eagles thanks to a solid defensive effort by Rochester, lead by Minehan and defensemen Brandon Laws, Nate Rimmke, and Ross D'Eredita. Agarwal made six saves in net for Emory, while Minehan made seven saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season. Emory outshot Rochester 18-11.
Before the game, the seven Rochester seniors--D'Eredita, Laws, Minehan, Rimmke, Springer, Wheeler, and injured Ben Cross--were regonized for their achievements before their final regular season home appearance. With this group playing a major role, Rochester has won three straight ECAC Northeast Regional Championships. They have accumulated numerous athletic honors on conference and regional levels and they have consistently appeared on the UAA's All-Academic Team. Last year, they helped the University accumulate the third highest GPA in the nation among all senior colleges playing men's soccer.
