Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Wins Fourth Straight ECAC Title

The men's soccer team won its fourth straight ECAC Northeast Regional Championship with a 2-1 overtime victory over SUNY Geneseo on Sunday.

Freshman Tyler Green headed in a cross from Brandon Laws in the 99th minute to give the Yellowjackets the victory. Green, who scored three goals in the two wins over the weekend (he had a pair vs. Plattsburgh Saturday), was chosen as the tournament's Most Outstanding Performer.

The Yellowjackets took a 1-0 lead at 52:04 when Nick Wheeler crossed the ball from the left flank and Nate Micklos headed it into the net. It was the 14th goal of the season for Micklos.

Geneseo equalized with exactly 13 minutes to play. Some sustained pressure on the Rochester defense resulted in a corner kick. Adam Gloo's ball was steered home by David Aguado.

Rochester scored the gamewinner the same way it got the opening goal. Laws chipped it into the box from left wing and Green headed it in at 98:08 to secure the victory and the championship.

The win improved Rochester's record to 14-4-3 and tied the single-season victory mark again.

Green is the first freshman to win ECAC MVP honors for the Yellowjackets. Dan Ruegg, a senior, did it in 2000 (when Rochester defeated Nazareth). Jacques Appleby was honored in 2001 as a junior when the Yellowjackets topped SUNY Plattsburgh. Wheeler was recognized last year when Rochester defeated Plattsburgh at Fauver Stadium.

Brian Minehan picked up the victory in goal by making one save.

The Yellowjackets closed the season in a rush with an eight-game unbeaten string - six wins and two ties. The senior class finished their careers with 55 victories, making them one of the most successful men's classes to wear Rochester colors on the soccer field.
