Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey tops Geneseo, 4-3 in Penalty Strokes

It took 100 minutes of play and 2 series of penalty strokes, but the 'Jacket field hockey squad topped Geneseo tonight, 4-3, at Fauver Stadium.

Rochester was first on the board with under 20 minutes remaining in the first half with a goal by Kristy Johnson after a penalty corner. She was assisted by Celinda Fletcher and Krista Butler. Geneseo responded with 4:29 remaining in the first half, when Melissa Walsh converted a feed from Erin Brown to tie the game at 1.

The 'Jacket offense kept up a strong attack for the duration of the game, outshooting the Blue Knights 25-13 over the course of play. Geneseo goalkeeper Amanda Carver kicked out 11, while Rachel Cahan made two saves.

Geneseo came out on the attack in the second half. Jeanine Tripepi scored the first goal of the second half, with 29:52 remaining. UR answered 4 minutes later, as Johnson converted a penalty corner for her second goal with Kari Plewniak assisting with 25:02 remaining. Rochester then converted another penalty corner 4 minutes later, with Johnson getting a hat trick, this time taking a feed from Alicia Citro to put the 'Jackets up 3-2.The Blue Knights sent the game to OT with a goal from Laura Henson with 13:51 remaining in the second half.

The 'Jacket offense generated a lot of noise during the two overtimes. They outshot the Blue Knights 7-0 over 30 minutes, but were unable to convert their scoring chances. The 'Jacket defense, led by Erin Charnow, kept the game on the Geneseo end of the field, preventing the Blue Knights from shooting.

After two overtimes, the game went to two 5-shot series of penalty strokes. The first series resulted in a 1-1 tie, with Krista Butler scoring for Rochester and Sarah Maisonet scoring for Geneseo. This forced a second series, which saw Heidi Davies, Charnow, and Butler score for the 'Jackets to clinch the win, with Maisonet the only scorer for Geneseo's second series. The penalty stroke result is credited as a team goal, putting the 'Jackets up 4-3 in penalty strokes.

With this win, Rochester improves to 7-4 overall, while Geneseo drops to 5-7. The 'Jackets will take to the road for a pair of Liberty League games at Skidmore and Union, as well as a non-conference matchup with Wells. The 'Jacket Field Hockey squad returns to the River Campus to face off against Ithaca on November 20, with a 3:30 game time.
