Men's Soccer Wins ECAC Championship

For the fifth consecutive year the Yellowjackets are the ECAC Upstate Soccer Champions. Rochester topped SUNY Plattsburgh 2-0 in today's championship game here in Fauver Stadium.

Tournament MVP Nate Micklos scored both goals in the victory for the top-ranked 'Jackets, who finished the season at 14-2-4 overall. With those goals, Micklos became the school's single season goal scoring record holder with 20 goals to go along with 7 assists. Micklos also broke a 30 year-old record and became the school's all-time scoring leader with 42 career goals in his first three seasons on the River Campus. The record was previously held by Reed Martin, who played from 1971-1974.

After a scoreless first half, Micklos put Rochester up 1-0 when he received a pass from Steve Maltzmann and blasted it into the net from left wing at 52:29. Just over 7 minutes later, Micklos took a pass from Gary Stom at the center of the top of the penalty area, played the ball past onrushing goalkeeper Zach Manning and into the net to make it 2-0 at 59:47.

Goalkeeper Jack Burgasser made 1 save in net and went the distance for the shutout. Rochester set a school record this season with 14 shutouts in 20 games, breaking the previous mark of 12 by the 1997 squad. Rochester outshot Plattsburgh (15-4-3 overall) 9-4.

This was the third time in the past four seasons that Rochester has topped Plattsburgh for the ECAC title, the second at Fauver Stadium. The 'Jackets beat the Cardinals for the title 3-0 here in 2002.
