William Smith College edged ahead in the Liberty League field hockey race by defeating the Yellowjackets, 4-1, in Geneva on Thursday night.
The Herons are 3-0. Rochester is 2-1. The loss snaps Rochester's four-game winning streak (which included two wins over Liberty League foes).
The Herons broke onto the scoreboard just 1:44 into the game when Brooke Atwood scored the first of her two goals. She knocked home a rebound.
Rochester evened the score at 1-1 when Krista Butler scored at 30:20 by tapping in a rebound as well.
Yellowjacket goaltender Rachel Cahan was practically unsolvable in the first half. She made nine of her career high 13 saves in the opening 35 minutes and the teams left the field tied at 1-1.
The Herons, ranked 14th in the latest NFHCA Division III poll, snapped the tie with a pair of goals 1:29 apart. Elizabeth Saucier made it 2-1 at 52:43 and Atwood nailed her second at 54:12. Margaret Dolan, who set up the second Atwood goal, ended the scoring at 66:44.
Rochester returns to Fauver Stadium on Saturday, October 2, at 10:30 am to host eighth-ranked Hartwick College.
