'Jackets Second at Chase As Fisher Wins

The women's basketball team finished second in the JPMorgan Chase Scholarship Tournament after a 72-56 loss to top-seeded St. John Fisher College.

Emily Lyons and Jessie Graham were named to the All-Tournament First Team. It is the first All-Tournament for Lyons, the second for Graham.

Lyons battled inside for 13 points and nine rebounds. Graham hit five three-point goals and finished with 15 points. The five treys are a career high. This was Rochester's third straight appearance in the championship game. Fisher and Rochester met for the first two titles – in 1994 and 1995. The Cardinals won both years. Rochester won the last two Chase crowns.

The Yellowjackets defeated RIT, 64-38, in the quarterfinals on Tuesday and second-seeded Roberts Wesleyan in the semifinals on Thursday.

Fisher built an eight-point lead with 6:51 left in the first period. The Yellowjackets got two free throws from Megan Krebbeks, a layup by Danielle Muller, and two free throws by Lyons to pull within 23-21 with 3:37 to go. Fisher answered with three three-pointers in the final three minutes to take a 34-26 lead into the locker room.

The Cardinal lead was 10, 46-36, early in the second half when Graham connected on a three pointer and Lyons followed with a layup to pull within 47-41 with 12:10 to go. Fisher got a layup, then banged in a three to make it an 11-point game. The Yellowjackets were able to cut it to nine four times in the next seven minutes, but could get no closer.

Rochester is 8-5 and returns to the Palestra on Friday to face Washington University at 6 pm. The Yellowjackets host Chicago on Sunday at 2 pm.
