CANTON, NY - Senior Tiffany Elsenbeck scored all three goals as St. Lawrence University's field hockey team kept its Liberty League playoff hopes alive with a 3-1 win over the University of Rochester on Friday afternoon.
The Saints, playing at home for just the second time this season and the first time since September 10, improved to 7-4 overall and 2-3 in the Liberty League. Rochester falls to 8-7, 3-3. The Saints are currently a half-game behind third place Rochester and a half-game ahead of three other teams in the Liberty League standings. SLU hosts unbeaten William Smith on Saturday and will play a makeup game with Rensselaer in November.
Elsenbeck scored her sixth goal of the season 17:51 into play, converting a cross from senior forward Liz Allison. The Saint senior scored number seven just over four minutes later as she chipped her own rebound high over Rochester goalie Rachel Cahan and into the back of the net in a scramble in front of the Rochester cage.
Rochester's Krista Butler kept the Yellowjackets in contention when she scored 8:20 into the second half, but Elsenbeck put the game away when she scored after Julia Kiernan blocked a Rochester pass and sent the ball ahead to Elsenbeck, who completed her hat trick.
The Saints had a slight 17-15 edge in shots while Rochester had ten penalty corners to three for the Saints.
Sophomore goalie Emilie Lannamann made five saves, all in the second half, for the Saints while Cahan had nine saves for the Yellowjackets.
