Women Edge Herons in NCAAs

SCHENECTADY, NY - Rochester's Emily Urbanczyk (Williamsville, NY) scored in the 64th minute to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 victory over William Smith in the NCAA Championship first round match played at College Park Field Saturday. Teammate Mary Walsh (Pittsford, NY) sent in the cross from the right side of the net. Urbanczyk was there to slip it past William Smith keeper Nikki Dudley (Chittenango, NY) who came out to challenge. The Yellowjackets improved to 16-1-2, while the Herons fell to 15-2-1.

The victory avenged Rochester's only loss this year - an 0-1 decision at William Smith - in mid-September.

Rochester opened strong with several scoring chances early on. The first came just two minutes into play when Urbanczyk caught the Herons' Dudley out of the net. Urbanczyk sent the ball in from 20 yards out, forcing Dudley to pull out a fingertip save at the far post.

The Herons also had their chances right up to the last minute. In a final attempt to stay in the game, William Smith had two shots off a corner kick with just 15 seconds to play. Sophomore Laura Burnett-Kurie (Durham, NH) had a shot at the far right post that was blocked by a Rochester defender. Kate Warner (Glouster, MA) had the rebound shot attempt with just two seconds to play, but it was sent wide to the left post.

The Yellowjackets finished the game with 13 shots, while William Smith had eight. The Herons had the corner kick advantage 3-2 over Rochester.

Rochester's Adrianne Hulchanski (Camillus, NY) put up three stops in the match, while William Smith's Dudley had seven.

The Yellowjackets will play in the 2005 NCAA Championships second round match against the Union Dutchwomen, winners of their first round match. That game will be held Sunday, November 13, 1 p.m. at College Park Field.
