The Yellowjackets continued their success in the Liberty League this afternoon as they topped the RPI Red Hawks by a score of 2-1. The goalscorers were juniors Heidi Davies (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) and Revay Wilson (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland).
Rochester put on the pressure early as they peppered RPI's goalie with shots and challenged their defense with a number of penalty corners. Rensselaer scored first, though, as freshman Sara Stylinski (Southington, CT/Southington) pushed the ball past a diving Rachel Cahan (Evanston, IL/North Shore Country Day) after four minutes of play. The 'Jackets kept up the pressure and finally answered back just before the end of the first half. Rochester earned a penalty corner and passed the ball to the top of the arc; with 3:38 left to play, Wilson deflected a shot by junior Krista Butler (Carmel, NY/Carmel) into the back of the RPI goal to even out the score.
The game-winning goal came with 21:51 left in the game. The Yellowjackets' second goal looked almost identical to their first, as a penalty corner ball was passed to the top of the arc by sophomore Kari Plewniak (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home). The ball went right to Davies, who drilled a shot into the back of the goal, putting the 'Jackets ahead.
Rochester continued to pressure RPI for the rest of the game and barely allowed the Red Hawks into their half of the field. With 8:46 left in the game, RPI had a two-on-one breakaway; Cahan dove out to the edge of the arc and poked away the ball, stripping the Red Hawks of their best scoring opportunity in the half. A minute and a half later, a frustrated Red Hawk midfielder, Sarah Merlin (Sharon, MA/Sharon), committed a foul that garnered her a green card.
After their big win today, the Yellowjackets improved their record to 5-3 (2-0). Their next home game is Wednesday against William Smith – another strong League opponent – at 7pm in Edwin Fauver Stadium.
