Tom Arcidiacono rushed for 250 yards and three touchdowns to lead visiting Union College to a 41-28 victory over the University of Rochester at Edwin Fauver Stadium here today.
Quarterback Tony Marotti passed for 164 yards and two touchdowns in a balanced Union attack. The Dutchmen (3-0, 1-0 Liberty League) rolled up 24 first downs and 519 yards in total offense.
Rochester (1-3, 0-1 Liberty League) totaled 347 yards in offense – 235 on the ground and 112 through the air. Matt Bielecki rushed for 135 yards and two TDs. Quarterback Aaron Molisani passed for two touchdowns but was intrercepted three times and sacked once. An offensive tone was set early. Rochester drove 50 yards in four plays with the opening kickoff. Molisani threw a 20-yard TD pass to Tom Shay (Spencer, NY/Candor) and Rob Corey added the PAT.
Union needed one play to get even. On the first play from scrimmage, Marotti lateraled to tight end Ryan Perry and he threw a pass to Steve Angiletta behind the Yellowjacket defense. Angiletta out-ran two pursuers 30 yards for a 65-yard touchdown. Pat Cummings added the PAT.
A one-yard run by Bielecki gave Rochester a 14-7 lead. Union's Pat Sheridan intercepted Molisani and returned it to the R 27. Arcidiacono carried three times to push it into the end zone, the last a six-yard run.
Bielecki's breakaway 40-yard TD early in the second snapped the tie. Corey missed the PAT. Union took the lead for good, 21-20, on a one-yard run by Arcidiacono (and PAT by Cummings) with six seconds left in the half.
Arcidiacono scored on a 17-yard run in the third quarter. Marotti threw a five-yard scoring pass to Perry in the third quarter and a one-yard TD pass to Paul Deguire in the fourth.
Molisani threw a four-yard TD pass to David Ferris with 6:19 to play. Molisani rushed for the two-point conversion, completing the scoring. It was the fourth straight game that Ferris has caught a TD pass.
