The goals came fast and furious at Fauver Stadium on Sunday as the Yellowjackets defeated St. John Fisher College.
Nick Mikolenko, Nate Micklos, and Tyler Green scored twice apiece in a 7-3 win over Fisher in the Flower City Championship Game. Gary Stom had a goal and an assist. Micklos and Mikolenko had one assist as well. Patrick Ripp, Eric Meister, Stephen Maltzman, Bobby Milenovici, Chris Lee, and Mike Harris had single assists.
Paco Corbalan made two saves and allowed three goals. The Yellowjacket defense cleared one ball off the line. Scott Williams played the first 45 minutes for Fisher and made two saves. Jess D'Eredita played the second 45 minutes. He did not have a save.
Mikolenko was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. In two games, he had four goals and one assist. Maltzman was named the tournament's Best Defender. The Best Offensive Player was Sal Valle of Fisher. He had one goal and two assists in Fisher's two games. Valle, Ryan Downey, and Kyle Semrau scored the Fisher goals today.
The scoring started almost immediately. Mikolenko saved a ball on the right sideline and pushed it short to Stom. He hit a curling cross into the goalmouth where Micklos headed it into the top left corner at 3:51.
Just over five minutes later, the Yellowjackets scored one of the best goals seen at Fauver Stadium in some time. Maltzman served a ball from right wing to the back post. Micklos headed it in front and Mikolenko scissor-kicked it inside the right post at 8:58.
Fisher got even quickly. At 12:44, Chris Rossi dropped a corner kick into the goalmouth and Valle deftly tapped it inside the right post. At 15:21, Adam Blanchard hit a blast stopped by Corbalan but Downey was there to gun the rebound into the net.
Rochester broke the tie 20 minutes in. The Yellowjackets were awarded a free kick along the right sideline, 30 yards from goal. Mikolenko stepped into it and curled it over the goalkeeper to nestle in the top left hand corner of the net.
The scoring onslaught both ways was stopped shortly after on a good save from Corbalan. Fisher was awarded an indirect free kick for an obstruction deep in the penalty area. With a mass of Rochester jerseys in front of the goal, Corbalan dove to block the low blast from Blanchard. The rebound bounced to a Yellowjacket defender who cleared it.
Green made it 4-2 at 41:51. He chested down a right wing cross from Milenovici and scored from six yards out.
Fisher got close again early in the second half. At 53:26, Valle threw it long from the left sideline to the edge of the crease and Semrau headed it home.
A free kick led to the fifth Yellowjacket goal at 62:15. From 35 yards away, Meister played it straight up the middle and Stom back-headed it into the unguarded goal. Micklos made it 6-3 at 67:15. Ripp controlled the ball on the left sideline and pushed it into the path of Micklos. The veteran forward curled around a Fisher defender, then darted to the middle where he found running room. As the keeper started to charge off the line, Micklos hit a 30-yarder into the lower left hand corner of the goal.
At 83:57, the Yellowjackets closed the scoring. Lee floated a ball from right wing to the back post. Harris headed it into the middle where Green chested it down and shoved it into the goal.
