Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Late Goals Fuel Field Hockey Win Over Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY -After 65 scoreless minutes, Rochester finally broke a 0-0 tie with a goal from Lara Bucarey and went on to a 2-0 win over Liberty League rival Vassar. In a game dominated by the defense, the Yellowjackets did not allow a single Brewer shot. For the fourth straight game the Brewer offense worked hard to generate offense, but couldn't get on the scoreboard, and relied heavily on a defense that came into the game ranked third in the league.

Rochester improves to 6-4, and evens its Liberty League record at 2-2. Vassar falls to 4-7 and 0-4.

With 5:42 remaining in the game, Rochester freshman Christi Bottcher (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton Area) took a penalty corner and sent the fall in front of the goal. A scrum quickly formed, with players from both teams struggling for control. Rochester's Kari Plewniak (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) was able to force the ball into the open, and Bucarey tapped it in to give the Yellowjackets all the offense they would need.

Plewniak would also pick up the assist on Rochester's other goal. At 69:00, the midfielder recovered a deflected save off the stick of Vassar goalie Ellie Pomerantz (Hartsdale, NY/The Hackey School) and sent it to senior Kristy Johnson (Sylvan Beach, NY/Camden), who drove it past a diving Pomerantz.

With the exception of the two scores, the game was controlled by the two defenses. The first half was conservative by both teams, featuring mainly short passes, as neither team could muster any scoring opportunities. The first period saw just four shots, all taken by Rochester.

The Yellowjackets began the second half aggressively, forcing the ball into the Vassar half of the field. They got their first offensive opportunity of the day seven minutes into the half, getting back-to-back shots on goal. A line drive from freshman Celinda Fletcher (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon) was saved by Pomerantz, and a shot from Mary DiMatteo (Belmont, MA/Belmont) off the rebound sailed just wide. The Brewer defense would not allow another clear shot until the Bucarey goal.

The Yellowjacket defense was a stifling force for the entire game. The Rochester backs, led by senior Heidi Davies (New Canaan, CT, New Canaan) effectively shut down the Brewer forwards.

Taylor Herman (Flemington, NJ/Hunderton Central) started the game in goal for Vassar, and made three saves. Pomerantz picked up four saves in the second half.
