Rochester used a goal midway through the second half to post its eighth win in the last nine outings, 1-0, over Chicago at Fauver Stadium on Sunday.
J.J. Dennstedt broke a 0-0 tie at 62:07 when he headed in a a bobbled throw-in and the Yellowjackets protected the lead to secure the win.
Rochester improved to 12-2-2 overall, 5-1 in the University Athletic Association. Emory is 6-0 in the UAA. Carnegie Mellon is third in the table with a 4-2 mark and 12 points. Case Western Reserve, which defeated Washington, 4-0, on Sunday, is tied with the Bears for fourth place. both have nine points. The Spartans come to Fauver Stadium next Saturday in the regular-season finale.
Neither side could muster a great scoring opportunity thanks to hard work and good recovery by both defenses. Dennstedt had a chance to break the tie with 7:30 left in the first half. His shot was parried wide by Chicago goalkeeper Chris Giusto and the rebound by Jake Cargill was cleared by the defense.
Ten minutes into the second half, Chicago's Kenzo Manners roared towards goal on left wing. His half-volley flew past the right post.
Dennstedt has earned many of his 10 goals this season with crafty footwork. This time, his gamewinner came from his knack for being in the right place at the right time. The Yellowjackets were awarded a throw-in along the left sideline. Dominic Pellingra threw the ball into the center of an over-stuffed goalmouth. Giusto tried to battle his way through traffic to grab the throw. He couldn't get it cleanly and it bounced off his hands to the right, inside the crease. Dennstedt lunged alogn with Chicago's John Hughes. The two players collided, just a second after Dennstedt managed to deflect the ball into the goal.
Hughes was down for several minutes and finally was able to play. A different Chicago player was injured ten minutes later and his replacement made a sparkling save to keep the Maroons within one goal.
Rashad Masri was hurt in a challenge along the right defensive sideline. He tried to stay in the game, but could only play for about a minute before th einjury prevented him from continuing. He was replaced by Steven McRae.
With just under nine minutes to play, Rochester threw men into the attack, trying to seal the win with a second goal. Steve Welles played the ball into the goalmouth. Giusto pushed it wide to the right, but started to fall. It came to Rochester freshman Josh Richards who first-timed a shot. McRae recovered and cleared the ball off the line for a corner kick.
Giusto finished with five saves for the Maroons. Michael Peacock made one save for Rochester. It was his seventh solo shutout this year and Rochester's 11th shutout of the season.
Chicago is 5-9-3 overall, 1-4-1 in the UAA.
