Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men Open With 2-0 Win vs Oswego

Steve Welles scored one goal and set up the clincher as the men's soccer team defeated SUNY Oswego, 2-0, in the opening round of the Flower City Classic.

Rochester will play SUNY Cortland at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Cortland defeated St. John Fisher, 4-0, in the opening match on Friday afternoon. Fisher will play Oswego at noon. The matchups are pre-determined. Cortland is the defending Flower City champion after defeating Rochester and Fisher last season.

Welles broke a 0-0 deadlock at 59:21. Rochester earned a corner kick out of the left side. Timmer McCarthy looped the ball inside the crease. J.J. Dennstedt touched it across the goalmouth and Welles steered it under the dive of Oswego goalkeeper Eric Kukura.

The Yellowjackets nearly made it 2-0 in the 73rd minute. Sean Hantes tried a shot from just outside the crease on the left side. Kukura deflected the ball away and fell. One of his teammates tried to clear it, but knocked it into the goal. The score was waved off because Kukura's save went over the end line, giving Rochester another corner kick before the near own-goal.

Kukura was injured on the play and had to leave the game. He was replaced by Nick Liberati.

With 82:48 elapsed, Welles came down right wing and swung around a defender. Eight yards from the end line, he crossed the ball into the center of the goalmouth. Hantes ran towards the near post and re-directed the cross into the left side of the goal.

Michael Peacock made two saves to pick up his seventh shutout. Kukura had six saves and Liberti made two.
