The University of Rochester erupted for three goals in a span of three minutes early in the second half to pull away for a 5-0 field hockey victory over Houghton College at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Erica Gelb, Christi Bottcher and Anna Dobrzynski each had a goal and an assist in the game-turning run.
Bottcher finished with two goals and one assist on the evening. Gelb had one goal and two assists. Dobrzynski scored one of each. The first Yellowjacket goal was scored by Allison Beardsley in the ninth minute.
Rochester goaltender Danielle Pearson made two saves to earn her first collegiate shutout. Houghton goaltender Ashley Farr (S. Glens Falls, NY/S. Glens Falls) made 10 saves.
The Yellowjackets improved to 5-2 overall. Houghton is 4-3. The loss snapped a four-match winning streak for the Highlanders.
Beardsley scored at 8:51 from four yards away after Farr batted down a lifted shot by Rochester's Lara Bucarey. The three goal surge started at 41:54. Gelb played a penalty corner to the top of the arc and Bottcher whistled it home.
Two minutes later – at 43:58 – Bottcher hit a ball from the right sideline to Dobrzynski at the left post and she tipped it into the cage. At 44:52, Gelb hit another penalty corner to the top of the arc. The Yellowjackets worked it to Dobrzynski deep in the circle. She found Gelb on the left post and Gelb slid the ball into the goal.
The Gelb-to-Bottcher penalty corner combination clicked once more – at 58:08 – and that completed the scoring.
Houghton's best chance to get on the scoreboard came midway through the second half with the score 4-0. The Highlanders had a restart at the left side of the circle. Amanda Brenon took the shot with Ashley Hoffman positioned in front of goal. Hoffman feinted towards the ball, then lifted her right leg to allow Brenon's shot through. Rochester goaltender Pearson saw it develop and kicked the ball away.
The Yellowjackets held a 24-3 advantage in shots and an 18-5 advantage in penalty corners.
