Men Advance to Chase Semis

BROCKPORT, N.Y. - The University of Rochester defeated Keuka College, 65-54, in the opening round of the JPMorgan Chase Scholarship Basketball Tournament in the opening round Wednesday night.

Three players scored in double figures for the Yellowjackets. Mike Labanowski had 16 points. Mike Chmielowiec scored 13 points, and Max Kaplan added 12 points, eight assists, and four steals.

Alex Coleman scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Storm. Rob Crowley had 11 points and hit all three of his three-point field goals attempts.

Rochester improved to 10-2 overall. The Yellowjackets will play St. John Fisher in the semifinals on Friday night. That game will tip-off at 6:15 pm at RIT. Fisher, the tournament's fourth seed, advanced past fifth-seeded Roberts Wesleyan College. Eighth-seeded Keuka is 3-5. The Storm will play Roberts at 1:30 pm on Friday in the consolation round.

The Yellowjackets opened quickly at 8-2 less than four minutes into the game. Booker made two layups and Tyler Pundt had one, pulling the Storm within 12-10. A fast break layup by Coleman gave Keuka it's first lead at 17-15.

Rochester built a late five-point lead in the first half on a jmper by Nate Novosel, and then again at 29-24 on a three-pointer by Colin Cubit. Coleman's three with 47 seconds left made it 29-27 Rochester at the half.

Labanowski hit a pair of threes just 50 seconds apart early in the second half to stretch Rochester's lead to 10, 37-27. Keuka got as close as four, 41-37, on Coleman's jumper. A layup by Marcus Roberson and consecutive three-pointers by Labanowski, Bill Serle, and Kaplan put Rochester ahead by 13, 52-39, with 9:10 left.
