Women Outscore NYU, 5-0, in UAA Opener

Rochester capitalized on two rebounds in the first half, then scored three times in the second half to snag a 5-0 victory over New York University in women's soccer.

Brittany Huber scored two goals for the Yellowjackets. Ellen Coleman, Kirsten Ross, and Mae Butler had single goals. Ross set up one goal and Jessica Smith assisted on three others.

The win boosts Rochester's record to 6-1-2 overall, 1-0-0 in the University Athletic Association. NYU is 7-3-0 overall, 0-1-0 in the UAA.

Coleman opened the scoring at 19:46. Ross hammered a drive against the crossbar and the rebound came to Coleman at the edge of the box. She drove it low into the right hand corner for a 1-0 lead.

Smith let fly with a shot just under 10 minutes before halftime. NYU goalkeeper Rachel Ross parried it, but the rebound came to Huber who scored to the low right hand corner at 35:10.

NYU switched keepers at halftime, bringing on Alex Walters in place of Ross. The half was less than five minutes old when Coleman sliced into the box on right wing and was brought down. Ross drove home the ensuing penalty kick at 49:42.

Smith's second assist was part of what may have been Rochester's best goal of the season. She took the ball down the right flank after a throw-in, pivoted five yards from the end line and drove a head-high cross sizzling through the goalmouth. Huber, running strong at the back post, met it perfectly to head it into the net at 72:49.

Butler completed the scoring at 79:21. Smith got free on the left, cut just inside the box and laid the ball back for Butler to fire home.

Ross had two saves in the first 45 minutes for NYU. Walters had three saves in the second half. For Rochester. Celeste Hornbach worked the first 79:22 without making a save. Bridget Lang played the final 10:38. She made one save.

Rochester held a 20-4 edge in shots and a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks.
