All-American quarterback Dan Whalen threw for five touchdowns and ran for one as visiting Case Western Reserve defeated the University of Rochester, 45-14, at Edwin Fauver Stadium. The Spartans, who have won 23 straight regular season games, improved to 2-0. Case is ranked 13th by d3football.com
Rochester's points came from a one-yard dive by Clarence Onyiriuka in the second quarter and a 57-yard catch-and-run on a pass from Patrick Keegan in the third quarter. He finished with 104 yards rushing on 20 attempts and caught two passes for 67 yards.
Keegan completed 12 of 19 passes for 156 yards. He was intercepted once and was sacked four times. Rochester totaled 247 yards in offense.
Whalen threw two TD passes to Zach Homyk in the first quarter and one to Shaun Nicely. He threw two to Tim Cowdrick one each in the second and third quarters. He also ran eight yards for a TD.
On the first touchdown drive, Keegan completed third down passes to Onyiriuka and Adam Barrett to keep the drive going. He threw a 13-yarder to R.J. Napadano on fourth and one from the Case 37. Two plays later, Case was whistled for a personal foul, moving the ball to the 13. Onyiriuka sprinted 11 yards to the two, then hit the line twice to score.
