Lindsay Rood's goal in the 60th minute broke a 1-1 tie as the University of Rochester defeated Fredonia State 4-1 in the opening game of the Flower City Classic. Bridgette Varin assisted on the game winner as the Yellowjackets improved to 2-0 on the season.
Fredonia State got on the board first as Lauren Heilweil scored on a cross from Melissa Cummiskey in the 31st minute. The Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Erin Carballo opened up the second half scoring for the Rochester. Carballo cut left past a defender and lifted a shot over the top of goalie Meghan Meszaros (5 saves) to even the score at 1-1.
In the 84th minute Ellen Coleman dribbled past two defenders and sent a low cross that found the foot of teammate Christine Keck. The freshman's first career goal gave Rochester a 3-1 lead. Five minutes later Bridgette Varin capped the scoring thanks to another Coleman assist.
Celeste Hornbach finished with three saves for the Yellowjackets.
The win was number 399 for head coach Terry Gurnett. Rochester will host New Paltz on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the final game of the women's Flower City Classic.
