Proud Sets Up One, Scores One in Win

Phil Proud scored one goal and set up the other as the University of Rochester defeated SUNY Oswego, 2-0, in the opening round of the Flower City Soccer Classic at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

Rochester improved to 2-0. Oswego is 0-2. On Monday, Oswego will play St. John Fisher and Rochester will play Cortland. Fisher and Cortland dueled 1-1 through double overtime.

Michael Peacock made one save for Rochester in 67:52. Brandon Campbell played the last 22:08 and was not required to make a save. Matt Wopperer made six saves for the Lakers and Oswego cleared one ball off the line.

Rochester took a 1-0 lead at 35:02 on a penalty kick by Proud. Steve Welles, who created a number of good chance from right wing, cut into the box with a lead pass and was pulled down. Proud drove the penalty kick into the net for the game's initial goal.

In the second half, Proud centered the ball from right wing to J.J. Dennstedt. He spun, dribbled five yards forward, and lashed it into the top left hand corner of the net.

Oswego was unable to get going. The Lakers had their first good chance in the 49th minute when Bryan Pacchiana took a shot from in close that was blocked by the defense. The rebound fell to Jim Mertz whose followup was high to the right.
