SANFORD, Fla. – For the second consecutive day, Rochester had some clutch hitting performances and good pitching. On Wednesday, it paid off with a 9-6 victory over Emory University.
The Yellowjackets are 2-0 in the University Athletic Association championships. Rochester opened the tournament on Tuesday with a 10-8 win over Case. Overall, the Yellowjackets are 4-1.
Nate Stein swung the big RBI bat Wednesday. He was 3-for-5 with one run scored and four RBIs. Casey Storme doubled in a pair of runs and Andy Cannon scored four runs.
On the mound, Dan Ludwig worked six tough innings to pick up the win. He allowed six hits, three runs (all earned), walked four, and struck out four. Mike Ludwig relieved for the second straight day, but didn't have his sharpness. He left after four batters in the seventh, with Nick Cacciola coming on. He worked the last three innings, giving up one hit, one run (unearned), and striking out three.
Stein had an RBI groundout in the first, a two-run single in the fourth, and an RBI double in the sixth. Storme doubled home two runs in the third.
Emory scored two runs in the seventh to pull within 8-5. The Eagles took advantage of two hits, an error, and two hit batsmen. Cacciola came on. He got a flyout, hit one batter, then induced an inning-ending ground ball double play. Emory nicked him for an unearned run in the eighth (8-6). Rochester got that back in the ninth.
In Emory's half of the ninth, Cacciola got two quick outs, then hit a batter, and ended the game with a flyout to right.
