SANFORD, Fla. - For the second year in a row, Rochester won the baseball championship in the University Athletic Association.
Rochester defeated Case Western Reserve, 3-2, on Sunday to finish with a 4-1 record. The teams entered the game with one loss apiece.
Heavy rains in Florida played havoc with the schedule. Rochester played two games on Saturday, losing a wild slugfest, 16-14, to Washington, then coming back for an 11-1 win over Brandeis University.
On Sunday, Case scored a pair of unearned runs vs. Dan Ludwig in the top of the third. Rochester got one back in the fourth. With two outs, Nate Stein walked and came around on Steve Just's double into the left centerfield gap.
Rochester tied it in he seventh. Casey Storme walked and was sacrificed to second by Rob Barnard. Matt Francis singled to right center, bringing home Storme with the tying run.
Nick Cacciola relieved Ludwig (5.1 IP, five hits, two unearned runs, five strikeouts) in the sixth. He got through the seventh, then got himself into a hole in the eighth. With two out and a runner on first, he gave up a base hit, then hit a batter to load the bases. He atoned by striking out the number eight hitter for Case.
Rochester threatened in the eighth. With one out, Stein singled and Alex Caghan, who bunted into a force play, moved to second. They each stole a base, but Just popped up and Storme was caught looking.
It ended with two outs in the ninth. Francis drew a one-out walk. Moishe Lewis singled to right, putting Francis on second. Blayne Fuke flied to center with the runners holding. Andy Cannon singled up the middle and Francis raced home with the winning run.
The 4-1 finish at UAAs raised Rochester's overall record to 6-2.
