Baseball Takes Two From St. Lawrence in LL Opener

The University of Rochester baseball team opened the Liberty League season with a pair of wins over St. Lawrence at Towers Field. The Yellowjackets won the opener 13-2 and capped the afternoon with an 11-0 victory.

In game one, Rochester struck first behind an Alex Caghan solo homerun in the opening inning. Steve Just scored on an error later in the inning to give the Yellowjackets a lead they would never surrender.

Rochester led 5-2 before exploding for eight unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to blow the game open. Brian Bezek scored twice and drove in two during the inning.

Junior Dan Ludwig (2-1) threw six strong innings for the Yellowjackets, allowing two runs (one earned) while striking out five to earn the win.

At the plate, Dominick Caruso finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Steve Just scored three runs and drove in two more.

Rochester got off to an even better start in the second game, scoring four runs in the first inning en route to an 11-0 win. Andy Cannon, Nate Stein, Casey Storme, and Steve Just scored in the opener.

The Yellowjackets scored three times in the bottom half of the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Cannon, Caghan, and Blayne Fuke each accounted for an unearned run. Alex Parker's two-run home run in the seventh inning finished off the scoring.

Freshman Nate Kowal (3-0) scattered six hits and struck out five in six scoreless innings of work. Corey King picked up the save after throwing three shutout innings.

Matt Francis and Parker each drove in a pair of runs for Rochester. Cannon, Stein, and Fuke scored two runs apiece to help the Yellowjackets improve to 8-2 overall, 2-0 in the Liberty League.

NOTE: Sunday's double-header between Rochester and St. Lawrence will start at 11:00 am.
