VERO BEACH, Fla. - Three veterans combined for all nine RBIs as Rochester defeated New Jersey City University, 9-2, on Sunday.
Nate Stein had two hits and five RBIs. Alex Caghan and Rob Barnard drove in two apiece. Rochester improved to 2-1 after splitting two games with Neumann College on Saturday.
Nate Kowal pitched six-hit ball over the first seven innings. He allowed one run (earned), walked one, and struck out eight. D.J. Schwartz pitched the final two innings.
Rochester broke open a close game with three runs in the seventh and four more in the ninth. Caghan hit a bases-loaded single in the seventh, driving in two runs. Barnard followed two batters later with a bases-loaded walk. That got the lead to 5-1.
NJCU nicked Schwartz for a run in the eighth to cut it to 5-2. The Yellowjackets put the finishing touches on the win in the ninth. Stein hit a bases-loaded triple for three runs and Barnard plated him with a sac fly.
Rochester opens defense of its UAA championship in Sanford on Tuesday vs. Case Western Reserve.
