SANFORD, Fla. - Nobody said this was going to be easy. Alex Caghan hit a two-run home run on the first pitch he saw in the top of the inning, only to see Case's Matt Keen club a three-run shot in the bottom of the first.
When the scoring deluge was done, Rochester had a 10-8 win in its first game in the University Athletic Association championships. There was a run scored - by one team or the other, sometimes both - in each of the first eight innings.
Caghan, Andy Cannon, Nate Stein, and Steve Just scored two runs apiece. Caghan, Dominic Caruso, and Alex Parker drove in two runs each. Rochester had 12 hits, Case had 13.
The Yellowjackets went ahead for good, 6-5, with three runs in the top of the fifth. Caghan bounced out. Stein walked and took second on a single to center by Just. Matt Francis popped out. Caruso singled to center. That brought home Stein. Just raced to third and Caruso took second on the throw. Parker rapped a two-run single to center. Blayne Fuke walked, putting runners on first and second, but Case escaped further damage when Brian Bezek lined to center.
It was 8-7 Rochester heading into the eighth. The Yellowjackets scored two more on an RBI single by Just and an RBI by Caruso when he drew a bases loaded walk, forcing home the 10th run.
Ned Chanatry relieved Phil DiLorenzo to start the bottom of the ninth. He struck out Bills swinging. A walk and a fielding misplay by Rochester put runners on first and second. Chantry fell behind Keen, 2-0, before battling him to a full count and finally striking him out. He retired the final hitter on a fly to center.
Mike Wexler picked up the win in relief of Steve Guzski. Wexler worked one inning, giving up three hits, one run (earned), and walking one. The Yellowjackets are 3-1. They play Emory on Wednesday evening.
