'Jackets Sweep Vassar in Baseball

Rochester produced a five-run inning in each game and swept a baseball doubleheader from Vassar College at Towers Field on Saturday. The Yellowjackets won the opener, 12-4, and took the nitecap, 10-6.

The two wins improved Rochester's record to 22-4 overall, 14-0 in the Liberty League. Vassar is 6-17 overall, 2-12 in the Liberty League.

Matt Francis hit a grand slam home run in the third inning of game one. Nate Stein followed with a triple, then came home on a single by Steve Just. Andy Cannon had a pair of triples and scored three runs. Alex Caghan was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Just was 3 for 3 with one run scored and two RBIs.

Dan Ludwig worked the first six innings, allowing seven hits, four runs (two earned), walked four, and struck out six. Nick Cacciola had a 1-2-3 seventh with two strikeouts.

For Vassar in the opener, Michael Perrone was 2 for 4 with one run scored. Devon Luongo was 2 for 3 with an RBI. David Ringold had one hit and one RBI.

Game two was a bit more back and forth. Vassar took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Joe Castilla singled and eventually scored, unearned, on a single by David Keith. Rochester answered with five in the bottom fo the second. Blayne Fuke singled home one run, Caghan singled in two more, then Nate Stein hit a triple, and Just followed with an RBI single.

Vassar got two back in the third on a run-scoring single by Perrone and a groundout by Sal Costanzo. Stein homered, leading off the Rochester fifth for a 6-3 lead. The Yellowjackets tacked on three in the sixth. Fuke doubled, his third hit of the game. Cannon reached on a bunt single, moving Fuke to third. Caghan bunted for a hit. Stein moved the runners over with another bunt and Just singled to left, scoring two.

A sac fly by Luongo in the seventh and a home run by Costanzo leading off the eighth got the Brewers within 10-6. Vassar loaded the bases against Ned Chanatry in the ninth on an error, a hit batsman, and an infield single. Chanatry escaped, getting Luongo on a 1-2-3 double play and retiring Ari Glantz on a groundout to short.

Nate Kowal picked up his sixth win of the year in game two. In seven innings, he yielded eight htis, five runs (three earned), walked one, and struck out six.
