Baseball Takes Two from Clarkson; Clinches Top Seed

5/2/2010 12:00:00 AM

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Rochester waited all season long to clinch the Liberty League regular season title. And when the opportunity was there on the final weekend, they had to wait a little while longer, but patience was rewarded.

The Yellowjackets won twice on Sunday, 10-2 in the completion of a suspended game, and 7-4 in the regularly scheduled game vs. Clarkson University. The two wins give the Yellowjackets a 19-4 conference mark and the top seed for the playoffs. Rochester is 28-9 overall.

After losing the opener of a scheduled four-game set, 5-2, on Saturday, Rochester took a 3-0 lead through three innings in game two. Mother Nature interfered, with thunder and lightning. The game was suspended until Sunday morning.

The suspension didn't cost Rochester freshman Nate Kowal. He pitched three innings on Saturday, allowing two hits, no runs, no walks, and struck out one. When play resumed on Saturday, classmate Jon Menke took over. He pitched the final six innings, scattering six hits, giving up two runs (both unearned), walking one, and striking out three.

Kowal came back in game two. He pitched the first six innings, allowing nine hits, three runs (all earned), with no walks and two strikeouts. Nick Cacciola pitched one and two-thirds, giving up three hits, one run (earned), with one walk and no Ks. Steve Guzski got the last two outs in the bottom of the ninth to complete the victory.

This coming weekend's games will determine which teams come to Rochester on May 14-16 for the Liberty League tournament. Skidmore is second in the standings at 14-6. Clarkson is 11-8 after the 1-2 weekend against the Yellowjackets. RPI and St. Lawrence are both 11-9. Those two split a weekend set at St. Lawrence. In the coming week, Skidmore will play RPI and St. Lawrence will play Clarkson.

Rochester jumped ahead, 3-0, in the first inning Saturday of what turned out to be the suspended game. Andy Cannon singled, Alex Caghan bunted for a hit, and Nate Stein walked to load the bases. Steve Just singled to right, scoring two runs. Matt Francis singled, getting Stein home. The Yellowjackets left the bases loaded in the fourth, and saw Clarkson pull within 3-2 on a pair of unearned runs in the sixth.

In the eighth, the Yellowjackets took advantage of five walks, three errors, and two base hits to score seven runs, six unearned, and break the game open. The first seven batters reached base. Stein had an RBI on an infield popup. Francis singled home a run, and Storme drew a bases-loaded walk for another RBI.

Normally, the first game on a Sunday is a seven inning affair. Since the teams played six innings of suspended makeup, Sunday's other game became nine innings. Clarkson was the visiting team on its own field. The Golden Knights opened play with two walks and a hit batsmen. They got one run on a groundout double play.

In Rochester's half of the third, Stein and Menke hit RBI singles. Francis singled to load the bases and Just delivered a two-run single to put Rochester ahead, 4-1. Clarkson got two back in the fifth. Three singles loaded the bases. A groundout made it 4-2 and a single scored another.

Rochester scored three in the seventh, stretching the lead to 7-3. Caghan walked. Stein reached when his bunt was mishandled. Rob Barnard, pinch-hitting for Menke, bunted the runners over. Francis singled home two and Storme hit an RBI groundout.
