Junior midfielder Josh Richards's shot from 20 yards out on the left wing that sailed past St. Lawrence goalie Brian Abernethy in the twelfth minute proved to be the game winner in a 2-0 UR win over St. Lawrence University on Friday night.
Richards also had an assist on UR's second goal of the evening which occurred four minutes later, when he tapped a free kick taken by senior midfielder Jimmy Parrinello to senior forward Chris Blivin, who then slid the ball past Abernathy.
The goal was redemption for Blivin, who just two minutes earlier missed a good scoring opportunity when he just missed the goal off a pass from fellow forward Robert Eberhardt.
UR pulled off the win despite being outshot 15-13 by the Saints. Most of St. Lawrence's shots came in the second half – the best opportunity coming just past the 23 minute mark in the second half, when forward Brendan Gorman slid a ball from the left wing past UR goalie Scott Garfing, but just wide of the right goal post.
Garfing, in his second start of the season, picked up his second shutout. He did not have a save, but his teammates cleared one ball off the line. Abernethy notched six.
With the win, UR improves to 4-0. The Saints drop to 2-1 – Rochester's two goals were the first St. Lawrence has given up all season.
