ROCHESTER, NY- The University of Rochester used a career high 14 points from
Loren Wagner and a career best four 3-pointers from
Jackie Walker for its second win in a row to start the season. The score in the UR Chuck Resler Memorial Tournament semi-final was 68-43 over SUNY New Paltz Friday night.
Rochester (2-0) got off to a quick start to the game, jumping out to a 16-5 lead only five minutes in. The run was sparked by two Walker 3-pointers. She ended in the half with nine points after connecting on all three of her shots from behind the arc.
The Yellowjacket lead then stretched out to 27-9.
Madeline Korber helped add to the big Rochester lead with six points and five rebounds.
Coach
Jim Scheible's second unit consisting of Walker, Wagner,
Amy Woods and
Ally Zywicki really shined scoring 23 of the teams 39 points in the first session. UR dished out 14 assists in the first half compared to none by the Hawks (0-2). The halftime score was UR 39 - New Paltz 16.
At the start of the second half, Rochester kept the pedal to the metal and the 23 point halftime lead ballooned to 34 only six and a half minutes in.
With the comfortable lead, Scheible was able to rest his starters and get his younger player very valuable experience. Sophomores
Kelly Scull and
Paige Aleski were able to log great minutes.
For New Paltz, senior Shanay Bradley had the Hawks' top second half highlights scoring some tough baskets in the lane. She finished with a team high 14 points and nine rebounds for New Paltz.
For Rochester, Walker and Wagner were the only two scorers in double figures, as it was another balanced effort by the Yellowjackets who got points from 12 different players. Wagner finished a perfect 5-5 from the floor and Walker didn't miss a three, hitting 4-4. UR never trailed in the game.
The final of the women's Resler Tournament to be played Saturday night will be UR versus Baruch College who defeated Wittenberg University 79-73 in the other semi earlier in the day. Wittenberg faces off against New Paltz in the consolation game.
