PITTSFORD, NY-The University of Rochester (1-0) women's field hockey team used their veteran experience to start the season off right with a 4-0 victory over St. John Fisher College (0-1) on Thursday night at Fisher's Growney Stadium.
Leading the way for Rochester was senior
Allison Beardsley (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) who netted the first and game-winning goal of the night in the 2nd minute. The goal was scored as she went past two Cardinal defenders and put it into the net from straight on 15 yards out. Beardsley also assisted on Rochester's second goal in the 25th minute that was scored by junior
Anna Dobrzynski (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland).
The two remaining goals were scored in the second half by junior
Shelby Hall (Hamburg, NY/ Hamburg) and freshman substitute
Gina Cunningham (Pittsburgh, PA/Shady Side Academy).
The Yellowjacket defense was especially stingy against Fisher, who was playing in their first ever field hockey game after adding the program last off-season. Rochester allowed only one official shot on goal for the entire 70 minutes, the one save was made by goalie
Madison Wagner. Rochester unleashed 17 shots on Fisher's goalie Kellie Redmond who made 14 saves.
Rochester next plays at Hartwick College on Saturday at 2 pm.
