Rochester Tops Medaille in Season Opener 7-0

The University of Rochester women's soccer team got off to a blazing start to their season defeating outnumbered Medaille College 7-0 on Friday afternoon.

The Yellowjackets (1-0) started out the game quickly scoring 50 seconds into the game off an Elizabeth Martens (Hughesville, PA/Blair Academy) header that bounced right to her off a rebound.

Rochester didn't waste any time adding another goal, with reigning UAA Player of the Year Ellen Coleman (Wauwatosa, WI/Wauwatosa West) notching her first goal of the season four minutes later. The goal was scored on a header off a beautiful cross from Grace Van der Ven (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles).

Sophomore Jessica Opatich (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa), junior Heather Alico (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park), and freshman Morgan O'Brien (Orefield, PA/Orefield) tallied the next three goals as subs for Rochester before the half ended.

The second half saw two Rochester players score their second goals of the game with Coleman and O'Brien finding the back of the net.

A total of seven different Yellowjackets recorded an assist in the game.

Rochester outshot the Mavericks (0-1) 33 to 0, 17 of which were on goal. Junior Bridget Lang (Chesterfield, NJ/Peddie School) and sophomore Allison Bernstein (West Chester, PA/Unionville) combined for the shutout for UR. Denay O'Connor recorded 10 saves for Medaille.

The victory was also the first in the career of long time assistant turned UR head coach Thomas "Sike" Dardaganis.

Up next for the Yellowjackets is Skidmore College (1-0) in the Flower City championship game (1:30 pm) while Medaille will take on SUNY Geneseo (0-1) in the consolation game (11 am) on Saturday.
