Men's and Women's Soccer Participate in Go4theGoal Foundation's “Lace-Up 4 Pediatric Cancer”
Both the men's and women's soccer teams have joined what is rapidly becoming one of the hottest movements in collegiate soccer: the donning of neon yellow shoelaces to promote awareness for pediatric cancer, as part of the Go4theGoal Foundation's “Lace-Up 4 Pediatric Cancer” project.
The Go4theGoal Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that raises money to support children who are battling cancer, recently started the shoelace movement, which has been spreading across the country like a contagious virus.
Just a handful of the schools who are teaming-up with UR soccer for the cause include the University of Michigan, Syracuse University, University of North Carolina, Wake Forest University, Marquette University, and Florida State University.
In their 2-0 win against St. John Fisher College this past Tuesday night, the entire men's team wore Go4theGoal's neon laces for the first time.
“Cancer is something that affects people in all walks of life,” said junior goalkeeper Scott Garfing, who is 5-1 on the year and has four shutouts. “We felt it was important to raise awareness any way possible. The neon yellow laces are a nice way for people to see them, ask about it. It's a good way for people to really start thinking about pediatric cancer as a cause and something we can start supporting.”
According to women's head coach
Sike Dardaganis, the women's team will be “Lacing-Up” on Saturday against Brandeis University. Like the men's team, the UR women understand the magnitude of joining Go4theGoal's project.
“It's such an important cause that affects so many people nationwide,” said junior goalkeeper Bridget Lang, who has a 4-2 record in net. “It's huge for us to be able to support and become part of [Go4theGoal], an organization that is spreading nationwide.”
Men's and Women's Soccer:
Both UR soccer teams will be opening up their UAA schedules this Saturday when they travel to Waltham, Mass. to take on Brandeis University.
The men (6-2-0, 0-0-0 UAA) are slated to play the Judges (6-2-0, 0-0-0 UAA) at 1pm, with the women's game following right afterwards at 3:30pm.
The men are currently on a two-game winning streak after beating Lycoming College, 1-0, on 9/24 and St. John Fisher College, 2-0, on 9/27. It's important to note that both of the men's losses this year have come at the hands of two national powerhouses: #4 St. Lawrence University and #10 Hobart College. UR's tough schedule thus far should have them well prepared for Saturday's contest.
“The UAA is a big gauntlet,” UR junior goalkeeper Scott Garfing said. “Every game is tough. You have to learn how to grind out those one-goal wins. I think were ready and we're excited to get back on track because there were some downs in the beginning of the season but I think were ready to go on a run now with our two-game win streak.”
Like their male counterparts, the #20 UR women's team (5-2-0, 0-0-0 UAA) has also lost both of its games to Top 25 members, #21 Union College and #4 William Smith College. UR will be the first Top 25 team the Brandeis women (4-5-0, 0-0-0 UAA) have faced all year.
Golf:
The UR golf team has been making some serious noise on a national level this fall season, as apparent by the most recent Division III national poll conducted by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Although unranked, UR received the second most votes in the “others receiving votes” category, meaning they are effectively ranked 27th in the nation.
The Yellow Jackets next and final tournament of the fall is the McDaniel Fall Invitational, which takes place 10/8-10/9 at the Bridges Golf Course in Abbottstown, Pa.
Men's and Women's Cross-Country:
Both of the cross-country teams will be traveling to Lehigh University to race in the Paul Short Invitational on Friday. The Paul Short Invitational, which according to the Campus Times is one of the most renowned races in the nation, features teams from all of the NCAA divisions.
The Yellow Jackets will be competing in the Brown Division against a plethora of Division I and II teams. The race will be a great opportunity for UR to see where they stack up against higher division competitors.
Some of the Division I teams that will be racing against UR include:
Men: Coastal Carolina University, Manhattan College, Iona College, Georgia State University and Binghamton University
Women: Iona College, Princeton University, University of Buffalo, University of North Carolina-Asheville, Lafayette College and Temple University
Field Hockey:
Coming off a 2-1 win against Utica College on 9/28, the field hockey team (7-3, 0-2 Liberty League) will be playing in two games this weekend: Away at SUNY Morrisville (0-7, 0-0 SUNYAC) for a 2pm game on Saturday and home against Washington & Jefferson College (5-1, 1-1 Empire 8) for a 1pm game on Sunday.
UR's game against Washington & Jefferson will open a three-game home stand that will culminate with Liberty League contests against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on 10/7 and Vassar College on 10/8.
Football:
The men's football team (1-2, 0-1 Liberty League) is coming off a tough 41-34 loss last weekend to Liberty League foe Union College, but they will have a shot to get back on track in conference competition when they travel to Troy, N.Y. to take on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) (1-2, 0-1 Liberty League) on Saturday at 1pm.
RPI is coming off a Liberty League loss as well, as the Engineers were defeated by Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 34-31, last weekend.
Be sure to take note of this interesting statistic: The road team in the UR-RPI series has won each of the last four games. We will see if UR will be able to continue that trend.
Volleyball:
This weekend marks the opening of UAA competition for the UR volleyball team (12-6, 0-0 UAA), as the Yellow Jackets will be traveling to Washington University in St. Louis to play a trio of UAA foes.
On Saturday, UR will take on Case Western Reserve University (11-4, 0-0 UAA) at 12:30pm followed by #4 Emory University (17-1, 0-0 UAA) at 2:30pm. The 'Jackets will then play #16 University of Chicago (16-1, 0-0 UAA) at 10am on Sunday.
The volleyball team's next round of regular season UAA competition will take place on the campus of UR in the Palestra during the weekend of 10/15-10/16.
Women's Rowing:
The women's rowing team will be crossing the border this weekend to compete in the Head of the Trent, the team's second competition of the year. Located in Peterborough, Ontario, the race will take place at 10am on Saturday.
The rowing team opened up its season on 9/18 in dominating fashion, as the women's varsity 8 won the gold medal at the Western Ontario Invitational in London, Ontario. UR was the lone United States competitor at that regatta, which attracts top Canadian Universities.
Men's Tennis:
This Friday to Sunday, UR will have three singles teams and one doubles team compete in the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association championships at Skidmore College.
The singles players scheduled to compete are sophomore Boris Borovcanin, who won the A Flight Singles title two weeks ago at the St. Lawrence Fall Classic, junior Joel Allen and senior Brian Rice.
The doubles team includes Rice and Borovcanin. The duo played together at the St. Lawrence Fall Classic and finished in second place in the A Flight Doubles tournament.
