Cold Shooting Plagues 'Jackets vs, NYU



NEW YORK, N.Y. - Rochester was unable to find its offensive rhythm on Sunday afternoon as New York University defeated the Yellowjackets, 74-50, at the Coles Sports Center in lower Manhattan.

The Yellowjackets hit just 40% from the field (18-45) and made only four of 17 outside the arc (24% against an inspired Violet team coming off a big win against fourth-ranked Emory on Friday night.

Nate Novosel and John DiBartolomeo were the only two Yellowjackets to hit double figures. Novosel scored 13 points and DiBartolomeo added 10 points, four assists, and three steals. Chris Dende scored seven points, six in the first half, that ended with NYU in front, 34-24.

Rochester won the rebound battle, 29-27. Rob Reid and Marcus Williams had seven boards apiece.

Kyle Stockmal had 14 points to lead a balanced NYU attack. Carl Yaffe and Andy Stein scored 12 apiece. Devin Karch added 10 points. Stein led the Violets on the glass with six rebounds.

NYU shot 59% from the floor (30-51) and made seven of 15 outside the arc (47%). The Violets hit seven of 11 from the foul line. Rochester took 21 free throws, but sank just 10.

Rochester scored the first seven points of the game, but NYU rallied to tie at 9-9 when Stockmal converted a four-point play four minutes into the half. The Violets went on an 8-0 run to surge in front and the lead eventually peaked at 15 (32-17) in the closing minutes of the first half.

The Yellowjackets did get it down to six, 43-37, with 14:17 remaining when DiBartolomeo canned a three-pointer. Stockmal made two three-pointers in a span of 100 seconds to restore the lead to 10, 49-39, with less than 13 minutes to play.

Rochester returns to the Palestra this weekend, hosting Case Western Reserve on Friday night and Carnegie Mellon on Sunday afternoon.
