Violets Strike Late to Top Yellowjackets

NEW YORK, NY- New York University's Melissa Menta scored her second goal of the day with 1:38 remaining in the second sudden death overtime to lead NYU to a 3-2 victory over the University of Rochester women's soccer team.

Also, scoring for the Violets was Claire Shanahan with her third goal of the season.  Both Hayley Engel and Ashley Hunt scored their first goals of the season for the Yellowjackets in the Saturday afternoon contest.  Bridget Lang, in goal for Rochester, had 8 saves.

Menta got on the board first for the Violets in the 15th minute when she lofted a free kick pass over the charging Lang into the UR net.

With 16:48 left in the first half Lang punched another shot by Menta over the crossbar to keep the 'Jackets within striking distance.

Five minutes later, the University of Rochester's Engel would tie the game with an assist from Morgan O'Brien.  However, the Violets would answer back quickly with a goal by Shanahan to close out the first half with a 2-1 advantage.

Only 2:28 into the second half, UR's Christine Keck looked tie the game again as she rattled a shot off the crossbar.  Ashley Hunt would then score fifteen minutes into the second half to tie the game at 2-2.

The Violets threatened with 17:20 left in the first half on a long ball by Cami Crawford who would set up a one on one situation for Ashley McKenzie who was denied by a diving stop by Lang sending the game into overtime.

The first overtime saw little action as there were only two shots on goal in favor of the Violets.  The second overtime looked to be much of the same until Menta scored her tenth goal of the season to lift the Violets to 8-3 (1-1 UAA) on the season.  Rochester would move to 3-8 (0-2 UAA) and will travel to Pittsburgh, PA to face Carnegie Mellon University next Friday (October 12).
