The University of Rochester women's basketball team had a nice bounce-back effort on Tuesday night when they defeated William Smith College 79-46 in a non-conference matchup.
The Yellowjackets (2-1) were coming off an offensive struggle against the University of Scranton in which they only scored 45 points in the championship of the Chuck Resler Tournament.
On Tuesday, the Yellowjackets got off to a hot start and never looked back from there, UR jumped out to a 14-0 lead only five minutes into the game. That lead would be extended to 18 at halftime behind point guard
Ally Zywicki and forward
Loren Wagner. Each provided eight points in the first half.
The second half started with a big push from the visiting Herons (1-1), but unfortunately they couldn't capitalize on some Yellowjacket miscues. The sloppy play forced Head Coach
Jim Scheible to pull his starting unit from the floor only three minutes into the half.
With the second unit in, the Herons' Sydni Salvatore hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 14, but that is as close as the Herons would get for the remainder of the game.
Strong play inside from
Amy Woods helped extend the lead back to around 20 with 12 minutes left in the game. With the first unit in the game after that, Wagner and Zywicki helped balloon the lead up to 27.
Wagner finished the game with a team high 14 points and five rebounds. Zywicki had a great all around day with 11 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 three pointers. Woods finished with 11 points and six boards while
Danielle McNabb had 10 points and 6 rebounds.
For the Herons, Jaimie Rubin and Salvatore led the way with 13 points each.
The win was coach Scheible's 399th overall and his 258th at Rochester. He is tied for the most in Rochester women's history with Joyce Wong. He will look for win number 400 and the UR record next week at the Wendy's College Classic which begins on Tuesday 11/27.
