UR Tops RIT for Seventh Win

The University of Rochester women's basketball team used a 20-3 run to start the second half and blow open a tight game on the way to a 73-46 victory over RIT on Tuesday night.

Senior Amy Woods led the Yellowjackets (7-2) with 13 points and five rebounds.  Junior Paige Aleski had 12 points on four 3-pointers and sophomore Ally Zywicki had nine points and seven assists.

The Tigers (2-4) got behind 10-3 in the first four minutes but then used threes from Kayla Wheeler and Leslie Havens to spark a 12-4 run that gave them a one point lead at 15-14.  RIT's lead got as big as four at 22-18 when Madeline Apperson made a layup with 9:46 to go in the half.

Rochester then turned the momentum and rattled off a 17-5 run to close out the half with an 8 point lead, 35-27.  In that spurt, Woods had four points and Aleski made one of her 3-pointers.

The lead then ballooned to 25 after eight and a half minutes of the second half once the Yellowjackets erupted out of the break with a 20-3 run.  UR made three 3-pointers in that stretch on the way to 10 on the night.  That total is the most in over two years, dating back to when UR nailed 10 treys in a game against Oswego State on December 8, 2010.

RIT would not get closer than 18 the rest of the way as Rochester's bench got some productive minutes in scoring 43 points.  The Tiger substitutes only were able to record 15 points on the night.  In the second half Rochester outscored RIT 38-19.

The Yellowjackets outrebounded RIT 41-30 including holding an 18-10 edge on the offensive glass.  The offensive rebounds turned into 14 second chance points for UR.  As a team, the 'Jackets shot an identical percentage from the floor and 3-point range (43.5%).  RIT shot 35.3% from the floor and only was 4-17 from behind the arc.

RIT had two double figure scorers in Havens and Wheeler with 11 and 10 points respectively.

The 12 points and four treys for Aleski were both career highs.

The Yellowjackets are now off for a couple weeks for the holidays before traveling to Buffalo State on December 30th.
