University of Rochester junior women's tennis player
Frances Tseng (Rowland Heights, CA/Troy) has been selected as one of 32 individuals to compete at the NCAA Division III Individual Tennis Championships coming up May 24-26 at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, NC.
This season, Tseng has been Rochester's #1 singles player for all 15 dual matches as well as three other multi-team events. For the year, she has posted a 24-4 singles record. Three of the losses came against opponents she could see again in the NCAAs, Kara Shoemaker of Williams, Kendra Higgins of Chicago and Carley Cooke of Brandeis. All three were selected as participants in the NCAA championships as well. The fourth loss was in the final of the fall ITA Northeast Regional Championships where she fell to Ava Sedeghi of Vassar.
In the fall, Tseng posted a 13-1 singles record including winning the A Flight at the William Smith Mary Hosking Invitational and reaching the ITA Regional final. The junior also won the #1 Singles flight at the Bowdoin Invitational, posting a 3-0 record over number ones from Bates, Wellesley and Bowdoin which included two players ranked in the top 35 in the country at that time.
In the spring, Tseng posted an 11-3 singles record with strong wins over Division I Colgate and highly ranked D-III schools, Chapman, Whittier and Redlands #1 singles players.
Tseng is currently ranked as the #7 ranked player in the Northeast region in the NCAAs latest regional rankings. Five of the six players ranked above her in the region will also be competing at the individual championships.
During her freshman season, Tseng earned Rookie of the Year honors in the Northeast Region by the ITA (2009-10).
This marks the second straight year Rochester has sent a woman to the NCAA Individual Championships. Lia Weiner reached the round of 16 in 2011 before falling to Carolyn Warren of Johns Hopkins. This will be Tseng's first NCAA appearance.
The draw for the individual championship will be done by the women's tennis committee and will be released on the last day of the team championship (May 23rd).
The 2011 singles title went to Kristin Lim of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
This years tournament will be hosted by Meredith College and will run at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, NC.
