CORTLAND, N.Y. - Rochester defeated Nazareth College, 3-2, and swept Rowan University, 3-0, to win the Gold Division at the SUNY Cortland Red Dragon Women's Volleyball Invitational. The back to back wins boosted Rochester's early season record to 3-1. The loss came Friday evening to 13th-ranked Cortland (3-0).
Sophomore setter
Xiaoyi Li and senior defensive specialist
Lauren Bujnicki were named to the all-tournament team. In two Saturday matches, Li had 88 assists among her other stats. Bujnicki had 35 digs in two matches Saturday.
Rochester rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Nazareth. The Golden Flyers won the first two sets, 25-22 and 25-23. Rochester won the third set, 25-19, the fourth, 25-16, and then took the fifth set, 15-11.
Li had 53 assists, 10 digs, and two block assists vs. Nazareth.
Kelly Mulrey had 8 kills and 11 digs.
Alma Guevara had 11 kills. Megan Neff and
Sara Ribakove had nine kills apiece. Ribakove added 14 digs and two block assists.
Bujnicki had 23 digs.
Paige Idziur had four service aces and
Savannah Benton had five block assists.
In the Rowan victory (25-13, 25-19, 25-18), Guevara led the way with 10 kills. Ribakove had nine kills and 11 digs. Neff had nine kills, one solo block, and two block assists.
Li had 35 assists and four aces. Bujnicki had 12 digs and Mulrey had nine.
Rochester opens its home season on Friday, hosting the UR Invitational. Three matches will be played at 6 pm and three more at 8 pm. The teams will play in the Palestra (both UR matches are there) and on Zornow Courts A and C. On Saturday, the teams will use the Palestra and Zornow Court A. Matches are scheduled for 11 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm.
