Maura O'Conor and
Shelby Hall scored goals on each side of halftime as the University of Rochester defeated visiting Elmira College, 4-1, in field hockey at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
The Yellowjackets, ranked 20
th in this week's Division III poll, improved to 6-0 overall. Elmira is 0-2. The national poll is conducted by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).
Michelle Relin scored the opening goal for Rochester at 13:35 when she tapped it home from right wing. O'Conor made it 2-0 at 30:36, stuffing it inside the left post during a scramble in the goalmouth. Rochester led, 2-0, at halftime and held a 16-5 advantage in shots.
Hall pushed the lead to 3-0 at 42:50 making a 35-yard solo run from midfield and lining the ball under the pads of Elmira goaltender Lauren Thomas. With less than five minutes to play, Rochester's
Lindsey Randall cracked a shot from outside the circle on the right. The ball struck an Elmira defender and caromed into the net for an own goal.
Elmira's goal was scored by Becca Kraynak at 66:44. The Soaring Eagles pushed into the Rochester circle and Caitlin Sickau was able to slide a shot from the right wing towards the net that was tipped in by Kraynak.
Ten minutes earlier, with Rochester ahead 3-0, Elmira was denied a goal through a mix of ill luck and sound play from Rochester. After a penalty corner, Erin Duffy's shot hit the left post. It rolled along the goalline and was scrambled away by Rochester's
Kathryn Montgomery just before it rolled into the net.
Thomas made 20 saves for Elmira on 38 Rochester shots.
Madison Wagner made three saves on nine Elmira shots.
Alexa Freedman and Montgomery each had a defensive save.
