Kelsey Fish scored the lone goal on a header in the 62nd minute to lead #19 Union College to a 1-0 victory of the University of Rochester in a women's soccer matchup Saturday afternoon.
Early in the game, Rochester's
Christine Keck got a hard shot on net in the 23rd minute, but Union keeper Kayla Marti was there to make the save.
Union looked to counter with two hard shots at the net late in the half. With 10 minutes to go, Jennifer Mansfield shot a ball just high of the UR net. With fewer than eight minutes to go, Melissa Scinto fired a hard shot that was right on, but UR keeper
Bridget Lang was there to keep the Dutchwomen off the board.
Early in the second half, Keck broke free along the left sideline and generated another scoring chance for the Yellowjackets (1-5).
Nine minutes into the second half, Union's Melissa Mansfield had a great shot that ended up going just wide of a diving Lang, barely missing a goal.
Fish then scored after Union (6-0) was awarded a corner kick which was taken by sophomore Mollie Gilchrist. The ball came in from the right corner out to Fish who headed the ball into a crowded front of the net where Mansfield and UR keeper
Bridget Lang were battling. The ball just sneaked past the goal line before Lang could make a play on it.
Rochester's Keck looked again to score the equalizer in the 84th minute, but Fish was there to sweep the ball off the goal line after it got past Marti. The play kept the charging Yellowjackets off the board.
Union held the advantage in corners 4-3. Rochester shots found the net six times to Unions four. In the goals, Lang made three saves in a losing effort. Marti improved to 6-0 on the season making six saves. It was her third solo shutout on the year.
Rochester next plays a home contest against top ranked William Smith College in a game on Wednesday.
