Sophomore Madeline Buckley scored the game winning goal, her second of the night, with two minutes remaining in the second overtime as William Smith College defeated the University of Rochester women's soccer team 2-1 on Wednesday night.
Rochester (1-6) played great the whole night to hang with the #10 ranked Herons, but William Smith's firepower proved too much for the Yellowjackets who lost their third straight one goal game.
Buckley's second goal of the night came in the 108th minute off a corner kick from teammate Renee Jensen. Jensen set the ball in from the right corner looking for a teammate in front of the net, when it missed everybody; the ball took a great bounce right to Buckley who was charging in hard from the left side. She then settled the ball and fired a shot into the right corner of the net past UR keeper
Bridget Lang, giving the Herons (5-1-1) the victory.
The Yellowjackets were able to strike first and surprise William Smith with a goal in the 8th minute of play. The goal, on UR's first shot, was by sophomore
Morgan O'Brien who picked up a loose ball and chipped a 25 yard shot that curved into the top right corner of the net just out of the reach of Heron keeper Chelsea Dunay.
William Smith looked to answer in the 24th minute when Caitlyn Mitchell headed a shot off a corner kick past Lang towards the UR net. The Yellowjacket defense was aware though and
Kailee Zornow cleared the ball off the goal line, preserving the one goal lead.
Mitchell again had another great chance six minutes later, this time being stopped by Lang was her kicked shot that was right on goal off another corner kick. At the half, UR held a 1-0 lead.
With 28 minutes remaining in the game, Rochester looked to double the lead when
Hayley Engel used some fancy footwork to get past the William Smith defense. Her pass found the found teammate
Christine Keck charging toward the net, but the goalie Dunay was there to thwart the chance.
Less than a minute later, Buckley would get on the board for William Smith after she headed home a cross from the right wing. The pass came in from the Herons' Zoe Jackson Gibson who had a great game running all over the field from her right back position.
UR's Lang kept the game scoreless in regulation with a couple outstanding saves in the 79th and 90th minutes. First she spoiled Mitchell's third great scoring chance and then in the final minute, Breanna Kincaid fired a hard shot towards the top of the net that the senior jumped up and punched away from harm.
For UR, O'Brien and
Kathryn Rowe also looked to end the game in regulation, but their chances just ended up just wide and high of the William Smith goal. That set the stage for the two 10 minute overtime periods that would decide the winner. After no real good scoring opportunities arose in the first 18 minutes of the first two OT's, Buckley was able to net the game winner in the 108th minute.
For Rochester, Lang made seven saves while Dunay made two stops for the Herons. #10 William Smith held the big advantage in shots and corners, leading 19-7 in shots and 10-3 in corners.
UR's next game is Tuesday when they play host to St. John Fisher at 7 pm.
