Late Cortland Goal Holds Off Rochester

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Host Cortland State scored the go-ahead goal with just under 14 minutes to play to pull out a 3-2 victory over Rochester in field hockey on Wednesday evening.

The Yellowjackets fought back from a 2-0 halftime deficit with a pair of goals less than seven minutes apart. Karly Vdoviak opened the Cortland scoring at 20:28 by tipping home a rebound after Rochester goaltender Madison Wagner saved a shot by Erin Smith. Vdoviak made it 2-0 just 31 seconds before halftime when she deflected a pass from Sara Woodward into the Rochester cage.

Megan Keil and Lindsey Randall got the Yellowjackets even before the half was nine minutes old. At 36:47, Keil deflected a pass from Shelby Hall into the net. At 43:25, Randall took a feed from Michelle Relin and fired an eight-yarder through traffic to tie the score.

The Rochester defense blocked a shot by Woodward just before Erin Carrino knocked home the rebound for what turned out to be the gamewinner.

Wagner made six saves in goal for Rochester. Amanda Perricone earned the win for Cortland. She did not make a save. Cortland outshot Rochester, 20-8, and held a 9-6 advantage on penalty corners.

Rochester is 8-2 overall. The Yellowjackets return to Fauver Stadium on Friday at 7 pm to host Utica College.
