Smith Tallies Lone Goal in Win Over Naz

Senior Jessica Smith scored the lone goal of the game in the 59th minute helping the University of Rochester women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Nazareth College on Tuesday night.

Smith nearly got the Yellowjackets (5-3-1) on the board in the first minute of the contest, hitting the post off a corner kick just 51 seconds into the game.

That was one of just three Rochester shots in the half as they couldn't generate any other top scoring chances during the first 45 minutes.

Nazareth (5-3-2) would fire four shots in the period, two on net during the first half.  The Golden Flyers had their best chance 15 minutes in when Elisa Marchione had her hard shot from 20 yards out blocked by a UR defender.

The Golden Flyers would then get the first good chance in the 2nd half, getting a nice turn around opportunity from Ashtin Argentieri six minutes into the period.

Smith then scored her 9th of the season at 58:06 when she settled a pass from teammate Lee Stagg and fired a shot from 12 yards out to the bottom right corner of the net past a lunging Bethany Novak, giving Rochester a 1-0 lead.

Nazareth nearly got the equalizer at 77:37 when Olivia Delerth's shot slipped through UR keeper Aubrey Jaicks' hands, smashing into the underside of the crossbar, but not crossing over the goal line for a Golden Flyer goal.

For the game, Jaicks made six saves in her first career start for UR and only her second ever appearance in the Yellowjacket uniform.  She is 2-0 on the year.  Novak made four stops for the Golden Flyers and dropped her record to 3-1 on the year.

Up next for Rochester is a home contest against NYU on Saturday at 7:30 pm, the UAA conference opener for both teams.
