SUNY Geneseo senior Kayla DeAngleis had a career day as the Knights upset the #18 ranked University of Rochester field hockey 6-4 on a rainy Saturday at UR's Fauver Stadium.
Â
DeAngelis tallied a Geneseo record four goals in the victory, moving her totals to 53 in her career with 128 total points, both of those school records. With the win, Geneseo moves to 12-6 on the season while Rochester falls to 14-5.
Â
The visiting Knights were able to get on the board first in the eighth minute when DeAngelis scored her team leading 19th of the season off a rebound off the UR keeper
Madison Wagner.
Â
The lead would double 11 minutes later, when  Kerry Hosford chipped in a shot from the left wing that just trickled past Wagner for a 2-0 Geneseo lead.
Â
UR would cut into the lead late in the half off a penalty corner. Junior
Megan Keil earned the goal after inserting the ball to teammate
Lindsey Randall. Randall's initial blast was saved by Geneseo keeper Dayna Mercer but the rebound went to sophomore
Michelle Relin who backhanded a pass to the near post to Keil for the tip in.
Â
The Yellowjackets would then score the equalizer with three minutes left in the period when senior captain
Katie Flaschner scored on a rocket backhanded shot from the left wing inside the circle. UR headed to intermission with all the momentum, leading in shots (7-5) and corners (8-4).
Â
Rochester took only 64 seconds to grab the lead in the second half. Then, freshman
Sayaka Abe finished off her third of the season with a back post tap in off a center circle pass from
Gina Cunningham.
Â
SUNY Geneseo wouldn't let the three unanswered goals rattle them as Geneseo's all-time leading scorer DeAngelis would score three unanswered by herself, putting the Knights up 5-3. Her second of the day came as she cleaned up a loose ball in front off of teammate Bridget McGovern's top of the circle shot. Her third just snuck inside the right post off a cross pass from Sarah Malinak and the fourth of the day came unassisted off a tough angle from the right wing.
Â
The Knights would get their fourth straight goal at 54:21 to boost the lead to 6-3 when Hosford would get her second of the day off a deflection from a top of the circle shot by McGovern.
Â
Mercer made a big save with under 10 minutes to go, keeping Geneseo's lead at three. The sophomore keeper made a beautiful lunging kick save, denying Relin a goal from the center circle.
Â
The Yellowjackets' Keil would tally her second of the game with just over a minute to go, but it was too little, too late for UR as the visiting Knights would go on for a 6-4 win.
Â
For the game, the Knights held an 18-15 edge in shots while Rochester earned 12 corners to Geneseo's nine. Wagner made eight saves in the cage for the Yellowjackets while Mercer turned away five shots.
Â
UR's season continues on Wednesday in the Liberty League playoffs when they host #11 William Smith College in the conference semi-finals at 5 pm.
