Second Half Carries Ithaca Past Rochester



ITHACA, N.Y. – Four players contributed to a clutch 14-0 run midway through the second half as Ithaca College defeated the University of Rochester, 74-61, in women's basketball at the Ben Light Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.

The Bombers, ranked #13 in Division III in the current poll issued by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, improved to 2-0. Rochester is 1-2. Both Yellowjacket losses have come against teams in the WBCA top 15. Then-seventh ranked Tufts defeated Rochester last Saturday at the Louis Alexander Palestra.

Jen Escobido and Kathryn Campbell combined for nine of the points in the game-deciding run. Rochester's Ally Zywicki had just tied the score with a three-pointer. It was 41-41 with 14:40 left in the game.

Escobido made two baskets. Campbell made a basket and later canned a three-pointer. Samantha Klie also had a layup in the spurt. Mary-Kate Tierney's three-pointer closed the run and put IC ahead, 55-41 with 10:25 remaining.

Zywicki led all scorers with a career-high 25 points. She hit eight of 16 from the floor, five of nine outside the arc, and four of five at the line. She added four rebounds and six assists. Danielle McNabb was Rochester's other double-figure scorer. She had 13 points. Loren Wagner scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Yellowjackets.

Escobido finished with 17 points and eight rebounds for Ithaca. Francesca Cotrupe scored 14 points, grabbed five rebounds, and handed out three assists.

In the first half, a layup by Emily Lewis put Rochester ahead, 20-17, midway through the period,. Lewis sank two free throws late in the period to give the Yellowjackets a 29-28 edge. Ithaca nudged ahead before Rochester's Blair Landolfi sank a three-pointer to force a 32-32 tie in the last 40 seconds. It was even at halftime.
