Early Goal Holds Up for Montclair in NCAAs

CAMDEN, N.J.- The University of Rochester men's soccer team concluded its season on Saturday evening after falling to Montclair State University, 1-0, in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Soccer Tournament.

It was just the third time in program history that the Yellowjackets made it to the Sweet 16.

"I thought we played well," UR head coach Chris Apple said. "I'm pretty sure we out-chanced them, we out-possessed them. We just couldn't put one in the back of the net today."

Montclair sophomore Lucas Terci netted what would be the game-winning goal 15 minutes into the first half. After receiving a long pass from freshman Mike Olla, Terci lobbed the ball over the head of Rochester senior goalkeeper Mike Moranz, who left the net trying to make a play.

With seven minutes left in the first half, Moranz came out of the net on a similar play. He collided with Montclair junior Jesse Shea just outside the box, and Moranz received a red card for interfering with a player on a breakaway. Freshman keeper Michael Shatkin played the remainder of the game in net.

Before receiving a red card, Moranz made six saves, including a number of impressive stops on breakaways.

UR's best scoring opportunity came with about five minutes left in the game when junior Keith Grafmeyer received a ball on the right side of the box. His header hit the right post and rolled out of bounds for a goal kick.

Throughout the game, Rochester put pressure on Montclair keeper Kevin Lynch, but failed to find the back of the net. UR held an 18-13 advantage in shots and took 10 corner kicks to seven for Montclair. Seven different Rochester players had at least one shot.

Despite being down a man, the 'Jackets outshot the Red Hawks, 8-3, in the second half. UR senior Max Fan and junior Ben Keeton led the team with five and four shots, respectively.

"I was really pleased," Apple said. "The boys worked their socks off, played their hearts out. They brought everything and just came up a little short, which happens sometimes in sports. I'm really proud of them."

With the loss, the 'Jackets finish the year at 15-3-2, a mark that included a 10-0-1 record at home and a UAA championship. Montclair improved to 17-3-3 and will play Rutgers-Camden in the Elite 8 on Sunday.

"To win the UAA, to go undefeated at home, to go to the Sweet 16. It was just an incredible season," Apple said. "I didn't want it to end and neither did any of these guys… The senior class was terrific. They were the heart and soul of the team. And the underclassmen are already talking about next year. They want to get back here and they want to go further."
