The University of Rochester used its size and scoring depth to power past Oswego State University on Tuesday night, winning 79-53 in non-conference women's basketball action.
Â
The Yellowjackets (3-2) got career highs in scoring from starters
Kelsey Hurley and
Blair Landolfi while also seeing bench player
Emily Lewis nabbing a career night. Hurley had 15 while Lewis and Landolfi each scored nine points. UR senior
Loren Wagner just missed a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds.
Â
As a team, Rochester outscored the Lakers (3-1) 48-22 in the paint. The Yellowjackets pounded the ball inside all night, using its size to dominate a small Oswego team whose tallest three players stand just 5-9.  Comparatively, UR has nine players at that height or taller.
Â
UR boosted out to a 7-0 lead a minute into the game behind two Wagner layups and a traditional 3-point play from classmate
Danielle McNabb. Oswego would fight back to within four at 18-14 behind five straight points from Lauren Nunziato midway through the half, but that is as close as the Lakers would get for the entire game as Rochester earned the wire-to-wire victory.
Â
The Yellowjackets used an 11-2 run late in the first half to give a comfortable 14-point edge heading into halftime. Hurley chipped in five points while
Ally Zywicki, Lewis and
Katie Weiner added a bucket each in the spurt. At the break Rochester led 43-29. UR's leading scorer Zywicki finished with 10 points and five assists on the night.
Â
Oswego leading scorer Jenn Robbins tried to get her team back into it, scoring 12 of the teams first 14 in the second half, but UR's balanced offense didn't allow the Lakers to chip away at the lead. Robbins finished with a game high 19 points on the night including three 3-pointers.
Â
For the game, Rochester shot 50% (33-66) from the floor while holding the Lakers to 35% (20-57) shooting. The 'Jackets dished out 22 assists compared a season low 10 for Oswego who also committed 18 turnovers. UR committed a season low 11 miscues. Rochester now leads the all-time series between the schools 14-1 after Oswego got its first ever victory in the series during last season.
Â
UR's next game is in the first round of the annual Wendy's College Classic on December 3rd against an opponent that is to be determined. The pairings for the eight team tournament will be announced on Sunday.
